Practice planning

Pay only when it removes a real bottleneck

Free resources can cover format, planning and substantial practice. Paid practice makes sense when it adds feedback, volume, structure or access you will actually use.

Begin with the job to be done

Do not ask “Is paid practice worth it?” in the abstract. Ask what currently blocks progress. You may need format knowledge, enough original questions, timed endurance, feedback on writing, live speaking interaction, or a schedule that keeps you consistent. Each bottleneck has a different low-cost answer.

Start free long enough to collect evidence. One reading set, one timed writing response, one recorded speaking task and a score conversion check can reveal where help would matter.

What free resources can do well

  1. Explain the current format using provider pages.
  2. Provide timers, word counters and score-conversion tables.
  3. Build general French through libraries, podcasts, news and conversation groups.
  4. Offer short original practice and self-review routines.
  5. Help you test whether you can study consistently before committing money.
  6. A disciplined free plan is stronger than an unused subscription. You can create excellent drills from daily-life French without copying secure test content: summarise a public article, compare two viewpoints, leave a fictional voicemail, or ask a partner for information about an invented event.

    Where paid practice may help

Payment can be rational when it gives you a large, organised bank of original tasks; preserves progress and mistakes; returns detailed, task-specific feedback; provides speaking interaction; or saves enough planning time that you practise more consistently. The value is the feature you use, not the size of the feature list.

    Calculate value by completed practice

A US$20 subscription used for twenty focused sessions costs US$1 per completed session. The same subscription opened twice costs US$10 per session. Before buying, schedule the sessions on your calendar and identify the exact feature for each one.

    Original purchase test

“For the next four weeks, I will complete two timed writing tasks and one speaking interaction per week. I need task-specific feedback and a history of repeated errors. The plan provides both, and I have blocked the time.” This is a clearer reason than “I feel behind.”

Check the terms, not just the headline price

    1. Currency and whether tax is added.
    2. One-time access or automatic renewal.
    3. Trial rules and whether a card is required.
    4. Cancellation method and when access ends.
    5. Refund window and exclusions.
    6. Limits on feedback, recordings or submissions.
    7. Whether advertised exam content covers your chosen test and all four skills.
    8. Take a screenshot or save the terms at purchase. Set a reminder before renewal. Do not buy a long plan merely because the monthly equivalent is lower if your exam is near or your schedule is uncertain.

What is free in this preview

The current repository includes a mini practice set; a TEF/TCF chooser; an NCLC converter; a French-aware word counter; a speaking timer with optional local recording; and free instant writing/speaking estimates subject to service caps. The quick estimate remains an estimate.

The full-product contract plans three mocks per exam, skill drills, accounts, progress, a mistake notebook and queued in-depth reports. Those features should be treated as planned until they are visible and usable. A purchase decision should be based on the live page you can inspect, not a roadmap described in this guide.

      When not to buy yet

Wait if you have not chosen between TEF Canada and TCF Canada; if you have no weekly study time; if you need general beginner French more than test format; if you have not tried the provider’s format information; or if the service does not clearly state currency, renewal and what is included.

Also wait if urgency is coming from a countdown rather than your exam plan. A genuine deadline should make the schedule more concrete, not reduce your care.

When a tutor may beat a platform

If one pronunciation contrast repeatedly blocks understanding, if you cannot sustain a live role play, or if written feedback leaves you confused, a few targeted tutor sessions may solve more than a large question bank. Ask for a diagnostic lesson before buying a package. Bring examples and request a practice plan you can continue independently.

When a platform may beat ad hoc tutoring

If you already understand your errors but need regular timed volume, automatic history, immediate feedback or a predictable routine, a platform may be more convenient. You can combine it with occasional human review. These are complements, not teams in a contest.

      A simple decision rule

      1. Name the bottleneck in one sentence.
      2. Try the smallest free intervention for one week.
      3. Measure whether it changed the bottleneck.
      4. If not, compare paid options on the feature, terms and duration that address it.
      5. Buy the shortest sensible period and schedule usage.
      6. Reassess before renewal.
