NCLC 7 TEF score and TCF score converter
Use the test name, skill and result scale before you convert anything. For NCLC 7, TEF and TCF do not share one number: each ability has its own IRCC range, and a TEF statement may show more than one scale.

The short answer
For a reliable conversion, match one score to one skill. IRCC's NCLC table gives different boundaries for TEF speaking, listening, reading and writing, and different boundaries again for TCF Canada. The free converter at /tools/nclc helps you apply those ranges, but it is a study aid, not an immigration document.
Start with a free level check
Take 12 questions in 10 to 15 minutes, with no account. You receive a practice CEFR/NCLC estimate, not an official score.
Take the free 12-question level checkChoose the TEF column
IRCC says Express Entry applicants should use the “Équivalence ancien score” column on a TEF Canada statement. The same official page says not to enter the “Score / 699” values because they are not compatible with the system at this time. CCI Paris Île-de-France confirms that a TEF statement can show a score from 0 to 699, a CEFR level, an NCLC level and correspondence with older TEF scales on its results page.
That distinction is the main reason a generic TEF to NCLC converter can mislead. First read the heading on your statement. If IRCC asks for the previous-score equivalency, enter that column. Do not copy the most prominent number simply because it is larger.
Use the TCF scale
TCF Canada uses two kinds of results. The comprehension tests use scaled scores. Speaking and writing use marks out of 20. The official France Éducation international TCF Canada page also describes four compulsory tests, with 39 questions in listening and 39 in reading, plus three writing tasks and three speaking tasks. Those are test-format facts, so keep the source beside your notes.
Never put a TCF speaking mark of 10 into a listening-score field. Never divide a scaled listening score to invent a mark out of 20. The skill label controls the lookup.
The NCLC conversion table
The table below reproduces the IRCC Express Entry table. Ranges are inclusive. A score at the lower boundary belongs to that row. For TEF, the values shown are the older-score equivalency scale used for Express Entry, not the current score out of 699.
| NCLC | TEF speaking | TEF listening | TEF reading | TEF writing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 181–225 | 145–180 | 121–150 | 181–225 |
| 5 | 226–270 | 181–216 | 151–180 | 226–270 |
| 6 | 271–309 | 217–248 | 181–206 | 271–309 |
| 7 | 310–348 | 249–279 | 207–232 | 310–348 |
| 8 | 349–370 | 280–297 | 233–247 | 349–370 |
| 9 | 371–392 | 298–315 | 248–262 | 371–392 |
| 10+ | 393–450 | 316–360 | 263–300 | 393–450 |
| NCLC | TCF speaking /20 | TCF listening | TCF reading | TCF writing /20 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4–5 | 331–368 | 342–374 | 4–5 |
| 5 | 6 | 369–397 | 375–405 | 6 |
| 6 | 7–9 | 398–457 | 406–452 | 7–9 |
| 7 | 10–11 | 458–502 | 453–498 | 10–11 |
| 8 | 12–13 | 503–522 | 499–523 | 12–13 |
| 9 | 14–15 | 523–548 | 524–548 | 14–15 |
| 10+ | 16–20 | 549–699 | 549–699 | 16–20 |
For example, TEF reading 207 is NCLC 7, while 206 is NCLC 6. TCF listening 458 is NCLC 7, while 457 is NCLC 6. A profile reaches NCLC 7 in all four abilities only when every ability reaches its own NCLC 7 row. See the NCLC 7 score guide for the direct answer and current TEF scale discussion.
A safe conversion routine
- Write TEF Canada or TCF Canada at the top of your note.
- Copy speaking, listening, reading and writing as four separate values.
- For TEF, confirm whether the value is the previous-score equivalency required by IRCC.
- For TCF, keep /20 expression marks separate from scaled comprehension scores.
- Look up each value in its own skill column, then record the lowest NCLC level.
- Compare the result with the official page before using it in an application.
The free NCLC converter follows this skill-by-skill approach. It cannot check whether you selected the right statement column, decide eligibility or replace IRCC's instructions. A PrepFranco output is a practice estimate.
If you need a wider preparation plan, compare TEF and TCF, review TEF Canada, or see the 7-day beta options.
Keep a copy of the exact input beside the result. That makes a second check quick when a number looks surprising. If a score falls outside a displayed range, do not force it into the nearest row. Recheck the test, the skill, the column and the date of the official instruction. A converter can apply a range only after those four choices are correct.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use a TEF to NCLC converter?
Choose TEF Canada, identify the result column requested by IRCC, select the skill, and enter that skill's score. Repeat for speaking, listening, reading and writing. Check the result against the current IRCC table.
How do I use a TCF to NCLC converter?
Choose TCF Canada, select the skill, and enter its result. TCF comprehension uses scaled scores, while speaking and writing use marks out of 20. Convert each skill separately and check the current IRCC table.
Does a converter give an official NCLC score?
No. A converter applies published ranges to the number you enter. Your test statement and current IRCC instructions are the documents to use for an application. PrepFranco results are practice estimates.
Can I take a free check before converting a score?
Yes. PrepFranco's free check has 12 questions, takes 10 to 15 minutes, needs no account, and gives a practice CEFR/NCLC estimate. It is not an official score.

Check your level before you plan
Use the short check for a practice CEFR/NCLC estimate. It takes 10 to 15 minutes, asks 12 questions and needs no account. It is not an official score.
Take the free 12-question level checkWhen you compare two results, write the scale beside each number. “249” is meaningful only with its test, skill and statement column. This small habit keeps a practice estimate separate from an official result and gives you a clear question to ask if an application form uses unfamiliar wording.
