Exam choice
TCF Canada vs TEF Canada
Both tests are accepted by IRCC for Express Entry. Neither is automatically easier: the useful choice depends on the official task format, your timed performance, and the date and centre you can actually use.

The short answer
For Canadian immigration, IRCC lists TEF Canada and TCF Canada as accepted French tests. Both assess listening, reading, writing and speaking. Choose the format whose productive tasks you can complete clearly under time pressure, then confirm the exact Canadian version, centre and date before you register.
Start with a free baseline
Take 12 questions in 10 to 15 minutes, with no account. You get a practice CEFR/NCLC estimate, not an official score.

The table below is a quick orientation. Each timing, question count and task description links to the provider or IRCC page that states it. Read the full source before booking because centres control dates and local arrangements.
| Feature | TEF Canada | TCF Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Immigration components | 4 mandatory tests | 4 mandatory tests |
| Listening | 40 questions, 40 minutes | 39 questions, 35 minutes |
| Reading | 40 questions | 39 questions, 60 minutes |
| Writing | 2 sections: 25 and 35 minutes | 3 tasks, 60 minutes |
| Speaking | 2 sections, 15 minutes | 3 tasks, 12 minutes including 2 minutes of preparation |
| Score interpretation | Use the previous-score-equivalency field | Use the TCF score tables by ability |
Which feels easier?
There is no official answer that one test is easier for everyone. The tests divide productive work differently. TEF writing has two sections: continuing a news item and expressing and justifying a point of view. TCF writing has three tasks: a message, a report or account, and a text comparing viewpoints and taking a position.
That difference changes the pressure. TEF asks you to settle into two longer modes. TCF asks you to change audience and purpose three times. A candidate who likes a clear switch from narrative to argument may prefer TEF. Someone who works well in shorter, distinct tasks may prefer TCF. Those are fit hypotheses, not score promises.
Do not use a forum ranking as evidence. A test form, your language profile and the room conditions all affect performance. Run one timed sample of every productive task before you decide.
Compare your writing and speaking
For TEF writing, try a 25-minute continuation followed by a 35-minute viewpoint response, matching the published section timings. Check whether you can develop the event, state a position, support it and leave time to reread. For TCF writing, complete three original tasks in the published 60-minute block. Check whether each text meets its purpose before you polish grammar.
Speaking is also a different shape. TEF speaking uses an information role play and a persuasion role play, lasting five and ten minutes. TCF speaking uses a directed interview, an information interaction with preparation, and an unprepared viewpoint. Record one trial for each. Notice whether you ask useful follow-up questions, explain a position and recover when a prompt surprises you.
A fair comparison
Write a new TEF-style continuation and viewpoint on one day. On another day, write three new TCF-style texts in one sitting. Then record the speaking tasks. Compare completion, clarity and time left. Do not compare the first five minutes of one test with the final task of the other.
Read the score scales correctly
IRCC maps each ability to NCLC and publishes separate tables for TEF Canada and TCF Canada. Raw numbers are not interchangeable. For example, the current IRCC table gives different NCLC 7 ranges for each test and ability. Use the table for the exact exam on your result statement.
For TEF, IRCC says the language level is based on “Équivalence ancien score”. Do not enter a practice percentage, an average, or an unrelated “score / 699” value as if it were the immigration field. A threshold also applies by ability, so a strong reading result does not replace a weaker writing or speaking result.
PrepFranco’s free check is different. It takes 12 questions and about 10 to 15 minutes, needs no account, and gives a practice CEFR/NCLC estimate. It cannot issue an official TEF or TCF result. Use it to choose what to practise next, then rely on the test provider and IRCC for registration and immigration decisions.
A practical choice method
- Confirm the label. Check that the registration page says TEF Canada or TCF Canada, not another version.
- Check the date. A familiar format is not useful if its next session arrives before you can prepare.
- Run matched practice. Use original prompts and the official timings linked above.
- Review the task. Mark missing instructions, weak development, pauses and unfinished work.
- Check the centre. Ask about identification, accessibility, delivery method and local arrangements. These details belong to the centre, not a general comparison page.
- Keep the four abilities separate. Read the current IRCC tables before interpreting any target such as NCLC 7.
If you are still unsure, start with the free level check. It gives you a small, honest baseline before you spend time comparing formats. If a focused seven-day beta fits after that, see the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between TEF Canada and TCF Canada?
Both are accepted by IRCC for Express Entry and assess listening, reading, writing and speaking. TEF uses two writing sections and two speaking sections; TCF uses three writing tasks and three speaking tasks. The official timings and score scales also differ, so compare the task shape and your available test date rather than raw numbers.
Which is easier, TEF Canada or TCF Canada?
Neither exam is universally easier. TEF gives you two writing sections and two speaking sections, while TCF divides those abilities into three tasks each. Your timed work, the exact centre conditions and a practical date are better evidence than an online ranking.
Can I compare a TCF Canada score with a TEF Canada score?
No. IRCC publishes separate conversion tables for each test and each ability. Use the score type named in the current IRCC table, keep the four abilities separate and do not average raw TEF and TCF numbers.
How should I choose between TEF Canada and TCF Canada?
Confirm the exact Canadian version, compare the writing and speaking tasks with timed original practice, then check date, travel and accessibility. Take the free level check as a practice CEFR/NCLC estimate, not an official score.
