TEF Canada practice test: free online plan

A useful TEF Canada practice test online should give you a clear next action, not just a percentage. Start with the official four-part shape, then use a short free check to see which skill deserves your time.

What to practise first

For Canadian immigration, the official TEF Canada presentation describes four compulsory tests: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression and oral expression. That matters because a general French quiz gives only a partial picture. Your practice should show both how you understand French and how you produce it.

Begin with a small baseline. The PrepFranco free level check has 12 questions, takes 10 to 15 minutes, needs no account, and gives a practice CEFR/NCLC estimate. It is not an official score. Use the result to choose a skill for a longer session, then return to the same kind of task after a few days.

The official TEF Canada shape

The format is worth checking before you trust an online worksheet. The CCI Paris Île-de-France page lists 40 questions for reading comprehension and 40 for listening comprehension. It lists written expression as two sections, with 25 minutes for Section A and 35 minutes for Section B. Oral expression has two sections and lasts 15 minutes in total. See the official format details for the current presentation.

SkillPractice focusWhat to keep
ReadingFind the sentence that proves an answerQuestion, choice and proof
ListeningTrack the speaker’s purpose and changesCue heard and cue missed
WritingFollow the task before polishing languagePlan, draft and one correction
SpeakingAsk, explain and respond to an objectionPrompt and short self-review

Do not turn those official timings into a promise about your own score. They describe the exam. A practice session can be shorter, but it should still have a stated task and a stopping point.

How to use a free online check

Take the 12-question check in one sitting. Put your phone away, answer without a dictionary, and note whether each answer felt certain or guessed. The estimate is useful as a starting point, not as proof that you would receive the same level in an official session.

Next, choose one skill instead of repeating the whole check immediately. For reading, time a small set and underline the evidence. For listening, replay only during review if the material allows it, then write the phrase that changed your answer. For writing and speaking, save the prompt and your first attempt so you can compare a later version.

Review each skill

Reading errors often come from a true detail that answers a different question. Mark the exact sentence that supports the correct choice. If you cannot find it, label the issue as inference, vocabulary or time pressure. This gives you a useful repair task.

Listening needs a different review. The official presentation describes listening comprehension as a question-based test, so practise hearing the point of a message rather than collecting every word. Write down the speaker, purpose, change of opinion or next action that you missed. A single number or familiar word is not enough evidence.

Writing practice should respect the two official sections. In Section A, check that your continuation answers the situation. In Section B, check that your position is clear and supported. Do a final pass for verb forms, agreements and links between ideas. The TEF Canada writing examples guide can help you choose a prompt.

For speaking, prepare questions for an information task and reasons for a persuasion task. Do not memorise a complete speech. Record one attempt if you can, then listen for pauses, unclear pronunciation and missing follow-up questions. The speaking practice guide gives you another focused session.

PDFs, scores and study choices

A PDF is convenient for reading and writing. It cannot reproduce the timing of an audio item or the interaction of an oral task. If you use one, check that its instructions match the current official presentation. Avoid worksheets that make an unsupported promise about a score.

For immigration, IRCC says language test results must come from an accepted test and explains how to enter the scores for each ability. It also says results must be less than two years old when you complete an Express Entry profile or apply. Read the IRCC language test instructions before using any result in an application.

PrepFranco estimates are practice estimates, never official NCLC results. Use the score conversion guide to organise study questions, then verify an immigration decision with IRCC.
